Automation vs. $15hr Wage...

The major problem with raising the minimum wage so that families could be supported on these wages is they lose their character as entry level jobs. They are now careers with long term job prospects. Then it becomes the same situation as is in France or Spain where the unemployment rate for the young is 30%. No one ever moves on from that minimum wage job. They stay until they retire. The job market for the young never opens up.

More and more business are opting to employ technology rather than $15hr minimum wage employees looking for full benefits packages. The economic model for human employees is becoming untenable with the increase in regulation. Why does the Left ignore this fate? It can't be as simple as pandering for votes.

Gov. Cuomo Raises Minimum Wage to $15 for All N.Y. Workers

It simply can't be sustained. As people become less involved in each others lives a touch screen becomes the preferred method of interaction anyway.

Which businesses are opting to employ technology ?

Did France ever have entry level jobs in the way that we have entry level jobs here?

BUT HERE'S THE REALITY....TECHNOLOGY CAN'T SHOP AT YOUR STORES AND SPEND MONEY....ONLY HUMANS CAN DO THAT, SO KEEP UP THE WORK, CORPORA.....YOUR FUTURE LOOKS DIMMER BY THE DECADES!!

Automation will come regardless of what the minimum wage is
Minimum wage has been $7.25 for eight years and automation still comes

Using "You can be replaced by a machine if you are not willing to work for low wages" is laughable

.

Unless you're some struggling small business owner, I will never understand why people are having a hard time embracing what is definately a necessary step in our economy. I mean like what fuckin planet do these people live on? The cost of living hasn't waited on a pay hike, shit just keep going up and up and up and yet workers are suppose to just deal with the shit and not expect raises, cost adjustments, just make more money for the man, I suppose!!

Go ahead and raise it. In time prices will reflect the cost of doing business, and soon $15.00 an hour will have about the same buying power as the current minimum wage and we'll be right back where we are now.
This will always be a dog chasing it's tail.

And by the way, in addition to fewer jobs, raising the minimum to this degree will end up finishing off what's left of small mom and pop establishments.
Corporate businesses that can afford the automation and or wage increases will be the only ones that survive.

So much concern for Mom and Pop businesses

Wages have little to do with the number of family owned businesses that are failing. Most fail because they can't compete with the volume generated and lower prices of goods in corporate stores.

Yet your only solution is to have low wage employees make up the difference

Not that facts have any place in this conversation but... Only 4.3% of the population make minimum wage according to the BLS. So let's cut the talk of a market crash from the lack of buying power of the poor. Arbitrary increases in wages that have nothing to do with increased productivity hurt the economy. In this case, tremendous wage compression will occur. According to the BLS the average hourly wage of a middle class family is $21.32hr. Under this plan, 2 fry cooks with 0 education and/or experience will be earning more than the current middle class family. That is how you destroy the middle class.

When unemployment rises, there will need to be more government assistance. After all we are compassionate people. This leads to higher taxes and national debt. And while all of the money is flowing into Washington (to be spent on cronyism), we continue to blame "big" whomever... Why do Liberals never include Big Government in the list of Pharma, Oil etc.?

We can't! It's ineffective and flies in the face of personal freedoms. It also has nothing to do with the post.

Do you think raising the minimum wage will speed up or slow down automation and outsourcing? Yes, that is a rhetorical question.

If it is hard enough already for people to find entry level jobs, we should not be making it harder by forcing the minimum wage upwards.
Again, a population of underpaid labor will not continue to support a consumer-based economy. Your dream of a nation of serfs and slaves is all well and good, but capitalism depends upon markets to function.
Good luck surviving the riots, then. They will want what you've got--and they will have nothing to lose.
So you won't mind the market eliminating jobs for under skilled people.

Such dire predictions. It will never, ever, pay to automate the work performed by low wage workers. The going in costs are far to high, and mostly limited to repetitive motion type work..

Touch screens in restaurants? Don't make me laugh.

Self check out lanes available at most stores ? The hourly sales necessary to make the darn things worthwhile are rarely if ever seen. The software necessary make for that shit to run often times exceeds the cost of buying & installing the registers. And that's the fer shit software that makes every customer look like an idiot & requiring the services of store personnel to complete the transaction. Don't even ask how much the good software is..

If wages increase, there will be a corresponding increase in consumer demand and spending. THAT creates jobs, and it's the ONLY thing that creates jobs. Check historical data if you don't believe me. The economy imporves when wages go up.

No, businesses that employ high cost employees in the food industry will go out of business, in favor of those using computerized ordering systems.
But who will those businesses sell their product to, when all wage-earning employees have been replaced by robot "slaves?" Economies can't function like that.

it has to with the economics of funding Government.

it could have profitable niche market applications: a scale train or boat delivery system could add to the entertainment value.
