WHOEVER gets put in the position needs to have at least a working knowledge of public education.

She doesn't

She has been working to improve education and advocates for actually improving schools, instead of allowing the existing system to work as a teachers union money laundering system.

From what I've read, she's been doing just the opposite.

Your example teaches children how to do a complex subtraction in their head instead of having to find a pencil and paper

Most of everyday math is practical application which does not always need to find the exact answer but the best course of action

Millions of children are already affected and will continue to underperform in the current system. Maybe, what we really need is someone who is not indoctrinated to current educational dogma and is willing to move outside the box in order to do what is best for our children. I don't know that this DeVoss is the right person for it, but its who has been nominated and unless she is proven to be some kind of child abuser or her nomination is pulled and she is replaced with someone else, then I'll do the benefit of the doubt thing.
