The war started because of conflict between the two parts of the US that existed since day one of the USA.

South states seceded and there's no law allowing for succession. So the North were "justified" in fighting against "traitors".

You can look at the war in many different ways, but the FACT is that the South killed 140,000 US soldiers.
In the modern era you have statues to Confederate. These people were "traitors" to the US as it exists today. It's the way it goes. People who support "traitors" are what?
