I actually don't know why they had to hit the thing with a heat seeking missile. Why couldn't they just put a small hole in it, where it would have come down slowly and we recovered the whole damn thing? Surely we could have figured out how to do that.

Biden administration claimed they didn't want to shoot the spy balloon over land because the falling debris might kill someone or land on a house or building.

But the spy balloon spend a lot of time slowly floating over the sparsely populated states of Montana and Nebraska.
Where the odds are a person would more likely be hit by a meteorite from outer space than falling balloon wreckage.
