I suspect most (if not all) mass-random shooters have a death wish by definition.

Maybe the shooter thought that people would treat him differently because they thought it was just part of the drill and that he wasn't actually an active shooter?

Either way as Pogo said, most active shooters end up dead, either by their own hand or someone else's.

More often than not they turn their weapon on themselves when they see a dead end coming. Their goal seems to be to maximize carnage until that point comes.
