‘He has been gasping for more than an hour’: the ‘bungled’ execution of Joseph Wood

AN inmate took almost two hours to die in another ‘bungled’ execution in the US today that has reignited debate over the death penalty.
Officials administered the lethal drugs at 1.52pm. Wood’s eyes closed.

About 10 minutes later, the gasping began.

Wood’s jaw dropped, his chest expanded and he let out a gasp. The gasps repeated every five to 12 seconds. They went on and on, hundreds of times. An administrator checked on him a half-dozen times. He could be heard snoring loudly when an administrator turned on a microphone to inform the gallery that Wood was still sedated, despite the audible sounds.

As the episode dragged on, Wood’s lawyers frantically drew up an extraordinary emergency legal appeal, asking federal and state courts to step in and stop the execution.

“He has been gasping for more than an hour,” the lawyers pleaded in their filings. “He is still alive.”

A total disgrace, the whole thing. [if you don't mind my saying so]

If they took condemned behind the courthouse and put a bullet in their heads, people'd complain about that too. There's just no pleasing some people. :)

We need to return to the less "civilized" yet more effective methods of yesteryear. Like the old saying goes: "if it works -- don't fix it."

They most certainly would complain about it, given the number of innocent people released from death row.

Just because someone is condemned doesn't mean they're guilty.
The justice system is far from perfect...some say corrupted.

Just because someone is convicted doesn't mean they're guilty.
Ray Krone, Sabrina Butler...sentenced to death.
There's a whole long list...8 such men were guests on 'my' Sydney midday tv show many years ago...
...and they're only the people we know about, how many others were execution-homicided/tortured to death in electric chairs etc that never got a chance to prove their innocence before they were 'dragged' from their cells to the death chambers.

Bullet in their heads, hanging, dangling from cranes, death beds, heads lopped off etc...it's all barbaric and human rights abuse.
The 'Christian' West is supposed to be civilised, more civilised that the rest of the world.
Death chambers are not 'civilised'.
