Can coal be phased out?

For India a nation of more than a billion people to produce only 5% of global emissions is impressive. But they cannot do away with coal. If you phase out coal what resource replaces it? Can developing countries do this? Developed countries used very much coal now they're trying to reduce coal dependency but what about countries still developing? I do not know the future of coal.
 
Coal is used for more than making electricity. You need coal to make solar panels.
