I have a pot with no lid.

Thought about making one out of cedar. Actually started today...but I'm having seconds thoughts about it.

Not much on the internet.

Got the idea from here.

Any thoughts?

I just throw an inverted pie tin over it. My gram's bean pot, i've always used a big teacup saucer.

Follow the directions about soaking it for 20minutes. I can see how it may effect the favor of the food if not.

NW natives used cedar for everything, cooking, storing food, salmon oil, everything. Check the book "Cedar"

Scrap piece of heat treated cedar.

Stained it with some off the walnut hull stain I brewed up a couple years ago.

Sealing it with some mineral oil.

Nicely Done!!!
With no knowledge if it'll work or not I think you've given yourself the best chance that it will if it's possible.
Be sure and give us a follow up.
I'm curious to see if it holds its shape.

Thanks.

If it beats tin foil I'll call it a win.

I'll let ya know if it works.

I feel like ive seen wooden lids before, but they had a metal ring that reinforced the edge. Im guessing it will begin to split at the edge without a ring like that and wood debris could eventually start getting into your food. It may also be a bitch to clean. Certain liquids are going to get into the grain.

Edit: Actually, i found this... Amazon.com

I have a plan...

I'm going to let it soak in mineral oil for a few days...maybe longer...let it drink up all the oil it wants.

Hopefully that will seal it up.
