Interesting contrast. We are chopping our military to the bone while Russia and China continue to expand. Like after Carter, so to will another conservative have to come to the rescue and pull our arse out of the fire.

China Expands Defense Budget Over 12% To $132 Billion

Submitted by Ankit Panda via The Diplomat,

The biggest Asia-Pacific defense story this week is China’s decision to increase its defense budget by 12.2 percent to about $132 billion for the next fiscal year. Notice that the figure is noticeably uncorrelated with China’s 7.7 percent actual growth rate (with a 7.5 percent target rate).

The numbers are expected, of course, and send a clear signal across the region that China is taking its investments in military hardware seriously. Contrast the Chinese trend with the United States’ belt-tightening on defense spending.

The United States and China are, of course, nowhere near to a convergence in defense spending. Our China editor Shannon Tiezzi takes a look at the similarities and differences between the two budgets.

Obama's cut to the military is minuscule. It should be cut by half, along with the entire federal budget.

Wishful thinking.

That's not "wishful" thinking, it's childish, irresponsible thinking.

IF they keep expanding at that rate, they'll approach our level of military spending in a decade or so.

Give "a huge omnipresent" Chinese government a try instead and see which works better for ya. Oh, but then it will be too late, won't it?

You have to remember that one of the large costs we have that china does not is labor costs in the military. We are a volunteer army, and we have to pay our people well, both in salary and benefits. China conscripts their army, which lowers the cost of paying soliders considerably.

One also has to count on China actually being honest with their reporting on military spending.

Don't worry, we'll still be outspending them and the next 9 largest military countries combined no doubt. Plus we probably have a few allies too. Least we waste enough money on foreign aid that we better.

You will find no one more pro-American than me. But I am so in the true sense of the term.

I do not worship the US government as you do. I much prefer limited government, free market capitalism, rule of law, non-intervention, and maximum individual liberty (even for dupes like you)....this is what America was founded on and made it the greatest and freest nation in history.

Big uncontrolled government, like the one we suffer under now, will lead to disaster. If you knew anything about history, you would know this.

Not really. We could run the military on half what it costs now if the military was willing to take a long hard look at the asinine policies it follows that cost billions in waste. I can save millions within my own shop – a mere 18 people – and actually BOOST production but the asinine rules that have been building over the last several decades make anything that we accomplish a bureaucratic nightmare.

In the air force, we spend more time flipping through power point slides and putting tape around the floor mats to mark their location than we actually do carrying out the mission. The sad part – we are the most efficient of the forces. The army inefficiencies is utterly horrifying.

China is doing everything to make it's self a great power.
1. liberalizing its economy and using capitalism. Not pure capitalism but capitalism with some common sense!
2. They're investing in science, r&d and infrastructure!
3. Now they have the money and know how to invest in their military.

= The road to power!

OMG!!! That means they're spending almost 20% of what the U.S. spends every year! We're going to have to spend more, more, more!

And pretty soon manufacturing will move to the new cheapest country. Then they will have very little to spend on military.

Entitlements need to be cut in half - the military should be increased by a third.

Does anyone believe that China would ever invade the US? There are enough guns floating around in America that the Chinese military would have to fight a non-stop guerrilla war against US citizens, AFTER evading the world's largest thermonuclear arsenal of ICBMs and defeating the most advanced military on Earth.

China can raise its military spending as much as it wants and it will still not come close to how much the US spends.

MMMMmmmm,

America has to spend 3-4 times on the dollar to get the same thing China can. Think about it.
