Sandy was a tropical remnant that was absorbed by a sharp cold front combined with a deep upper level low pressure system sliding along the front. The combined systems drew moisture from the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.. The winds were not tropical but were extreme due to pressure gradient.
Sandy was in essence "the perfect storm"...
IN the end, wind was not the main destructive force of Sandy. It was a combination of copious amounts of rainfall and coastal flooding due to Astronomic high tides and an on shore wind direction
