But the shift may not happen quickly enough to avert the worst effects of climate change.

Coal-fired power is on pace to collapse in the United States and Europe over the next two decades, and will peak worldwide in nine years, according to a long-term forecast released on Thursday.

Solar and wind energy, meanwhile, will dominate over the next 23 years, comprising nearly three-quarters of the expected $10.2 trillion in new electricity investments.

“This year’s report suggests that the greening of the world’s electricity system is unstoppable, thanks to rapidly falling costs for solar and wind power, and a growing role for batteries, including those in electric vehicles, in balancing supply and demand,” Seb Henbest, lead author of Bloomberg New Energy Finance’s 2017 New Energy Outlook report, said in a statement.

As a result, carbon pollution from the power sector will reach its apex in 2026. By 2040, emissions are forecast to be 4 percent below 2016 levels.

Sounds good to me! Coal powered the industrial revolution. However, now we know it's killing the planet.

Really? I didn't know the sun doesn't shine on the "flyover states". Apparently they have no wind, either.

Remind us when you can turn off the FF plants and watch the poor freeze to death because they can't afford heat while paying for Obama care.

So, if your lungs aren't black enough yet - you still have about 23 more years.

Lakota, you can reassure your Chief, Chief Shittingpants, that GW is not going to cause the casinos to close.

If coal goes under due to viable alternatives there is really nothing that should be done. But the government putting a target on it because the CC fear crowd hates science, that just ain't right.

You do realize you need batteries and run cable to make renewable energy to work, renewable energy at this point is a diminishing return... The vast majority of the energy needs up here in the northern plains is produced by By coal fired power plants… And that's not about to change.
Renewable energy Is many decades away from being in a viable energy source. Like I said I'm for all of the above, but it has to be reliable, competitively priced and readily available. They've tried a lot of the wind energy up here in the northern plains, it's not reliable and affordable yet. With solar you need jobs gobs of solar panels to run the most modest of things…

The vast majority of coal comes from open pit mining you dumbass motherfucker, there is no black lung from that. God you're stupid motherfucker. Lol

So? Then let it change. Once wind and solar can produce the same amount of power at the same price I don't care. If you need government subsidies then fuck off.
