Comparing Death Rates from Mass Public Shootings and Mass Public Violence in the US and Europe

Cocaine is not grown in the US. Yet tons of it exist in the US. What makes you think guns won’t be brought in when you can’t stop illegal drugs?
A different topic for a different thread.
It’s a topic for this thread. If you can’t control drugs flooding into this country you’re not going to control guns. So any discussion of gun control is moot.

A narrative busting thread using science, not emotions.
You statistics may be true but it’s worth noting that mass shootings make up a tiny portion of America’s firearm deaths, which totaled more than 33,000 in 2014. On average, there is more than one mass shooting for each day in America.

Another way to look at it:

And that isn't accurate either......our gun murder deaths...the only ones that count for this.....are concentrated in our democrat controlled cities......the places with the most strict gun control....if you compare apples to apples, states that are similar to European countries.....then the gun murder rates are the same or even less...

As the population demographic shifts in Europe we have begun to see much more gun violence. Especially in nations where there is an extreme influx of immigrants. This trend will continue to worsen and then the citizens will begin to ask for their arms back. The movement has already started in Britain. Your government, at any level cannot and especially in the case of W. Europe, WILL NOT protect you in many cases.
Euros for all of their superior posturing are, at the end of the day, just a sad bunch of idealistic rubes.

I predict that Europe and Australia are going to see massive increases in gun violence......if you look at their knife crime rates and their increasing gun crime rates....they are escalating just as they are reducing police numbers, police resources and hampering proper police work with politically correct policies........add to that an increase in single teenage mothers raising young males, and the importing of violent 3rd world males.....they are going to experience what the U.S. experienced in the 1960s as our own welfare state destroyed our inner city families....

Read the linked article and you might learn something.
There's nothing to be gleaned from it.
If someone wants to kill themselves there are plenty of ways to go about it.

They do not need to bring guns in, I can make one in my garage./ I do not think guns are the issue./ We had plenty when I was a kid and no school shootings./ Some thing has changed and not the guns./ I belive it is loss of empathy as people play with their phones and computers we spend less time with people and lose empathy. How to fix it I do n ot know. Add to that the population shift to urban centers means more people rubbing each other wrong. What exactly to do about the whole school gun thing, I realy do not know! If you had asked me if we would be having this conversation in the 1970's I would have thought you were crazy!

Science does not support your gut.

Wrong......countries with extreme gun control have higher suicide rates than the U.S....Japan, Korea and China for example, and many of those European countries have higher suicide rates than we do .......

it is culture, not guns, that make the difference.....since their gun crime rates were low before they started banning and confiscating guns....in Britain for example.....now in Britain their gun crime rate keeps going up every year...and London had a 42% increase in gun crime last year alone.....it is now a more violent city than New York...

Good info, thanks. Here is another interesting graph- it shows that the sheer number of whites killing whites is near the same as blacks killing blacks. What is disturbing however is that there are 5 times as many whites as there are blacks. So blacks are killing each other at nearly 5 times the rate.

It is most likely BOTH. Whatever the suicide rate for the US, it is increased by the availability of guns:

Let's arm all the children, it's the only way to keep them safe.

At least their kids can defend themselves lol, and aren't trying to turn boys into girls.
The US needs to do the same thing, then again their kids are pumped with behavior drugs.

Yes...I took an undergraduate Sociology course in the late 90's where we discussed Muslim 'ghettos' in Paris. Many could see it fomenting decades ago yet did absolutely nothing to rectify the situation.
The problem with Europeans, despite their voracious travel habits is that they simply do not understand the effects of one culture on another. I think they are beginning to see those effects at home. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, most of their politician's response to the issue is nonexistent, if not highly resistant. Ulterior motives? Ulterior objectives? Without bogging down or derailing your post, me thinks most certainly.

Absurdity...completely false...there is no correlation between the availability of firearms and suicide rate. The nations with...by far the highest suicide rates have restrictive to highly restrictive weapons laws.

Top five suicide rates in the world:
Sri Lanka 35.3 suicides per 100K-The estimated rate of private gun ownership (both licit and illicit) per 100 people in Sri Lanka is 1.51
-Gun law: Restrictive not guaranteed by law--http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/sri-lanka

Lithuania 32.7 suicides per 100K--
-The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in Lithuania in 2009: 93,386 (pop. 2.81M)
-Gun law: Restrictive not guaranteed by law--http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/lithuania

Guyana 29 suicides per 100k
-The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in Guyana is 155,000
-Restrictive not guaranteed by law--http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/guyana

Mongolia 28.3 suicides per 100k--Not guaranteed
-The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in Mongolia is 50,000
-Regulated--http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/mongolia

South Korea 28.3 suicides per 100
-The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in South Korea is 510,000
- In South Korea, civilians are not allowed to possess military weapons, such as revolvers, pistols, automatic and semi-automatic rifles and machine guns with no exception--http://www.gunpolicy.org/firearms/region/south-korea

The US is at 38
-14.2 per 100K.
-The estimated total number of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in the United States is 270,000,0001 to 310,000,000The estimated rate of private gun ownership (both licit and illicit) per 100 people in the United States is 101.05

No...actually, it isn't...

Fact Check, Gun Control and Suicide

There is no relation between suicide rate and gun ownership rates around the world. According to the 2016 World Health Statistics report, (2) suicide rates in the four countries cited as having restrictive gun control laws have suicide rates that are comparable to that in the U. S.: Australia, 11.6, Canada, 11.4, France, 15.8, UK, 7.0, and USA 13.7 suicides/100,000. By comparison, Japan has among the highest suicide rates in the world, 23.1/100,000, but gun ownership is extremely rare, 0.6 guns/100 people.

Suicide is a mental health issue. If guns are not available other means are used. Poisoning, in fact, is the most common method of suicide for U. S. females according to the Washington Post (34 % of suicides), and suffocation the second most common method for males (27%).

Secondly, gun ownership rates in France and Canada are not low, as is implied in the Post article. The rate of gun ownership in the U. S. is indeed high at 88.8 guns/100 residents, but gun ownership rates are also among the world’s highest in the other countries cited. Gun ownership rates in these countries are are as follows: Australia, 15, Canada, 30.8, France, 31.2, and UK 6.2 per 100 residents. (3,4) Gun ownership rates in Saudia Arabia are comparable to that in Canada and France, with 37.8 guns per 100 Saudi residents, yet the lowest suicide rate in the world is in Saudia Arabia (0.3 suicides per 100,000).

Third, recent statistics in the state of Florida show that nearly one third of the guns used in suicides are obtained illegally, putting these firearm deaths beyond control through gun laws.(5)

Fourth, the primary factors affecting suicide rates are personal stresses, cultural, economic, religious factors and demographics. According to the WHO statistics, the highest rates of suicide in the world are in the Republic of Korea, with 36.8 suicides per 100,000, but India, Japan, Russia, and Hungary all have rates above 20 per 100,000; roughly twice as high as the U.S. and the four countries that are the basis for the Post’s calculation that gun control would reduce U.S. suicide rates by 20 to 38 percent. Lebanon, Oman, and Iraq all have suicide rates below 1.1 per 100,000 people--less than 1/10 the suicide rate in the U. S., and Afghanistan, Algeria, Jamaica, Haiti, and Egypt have low suicide rates that are below 4 per 100,000 in contrast to 13.7 suicides/100,000 in the U. S.

Including justified shootings and suicides makes your data bogus.

My father used to take his rifle to school to go rabbit hunting afterwards.

Culture is the issue, not guns.
Also the liberal way of it being a right not to be offended.

John Lott is paid by the NRA to provide pro-gun research. His research has not been peer reviewed. Furthermore, no other researchers have been able to duplicate his results. Worse for you, attempts to duplicate his results, have produced a result directly opposite Lott’s results.

Lott sued one publication for defamation for questioning his results and that suit was dismissed, saying that questioning his research wasn’t defamation.
