Four religious Jewish women from the city of Beit Shemesh have filed suit against the city for failing to prevent an extremist sect’s pressure on women to dress according to its own strict rules of modesty.

The suit centers on several signs put up by sect members declaring that “immodest” women are prohibited to walk in the area. One of the plaintiffs told Yediot Aharonot that when she took down one of the signs, a man affiliated with the sect saw her and began throwing stones at her.

“There’s a threatening atmosphere here due to the repeated violence against women who the attackers think are not dressed appropriately,” she said.

The city is being sued for failing to remove the signs. The women are seeking 25,000 shekels in compensation for emotional distress.

Isreal has another serious social problem and this one isn't coming from the Islamic population, but rather from the Jewish population -- Hebrew Fundamentalists.

They do not serve in the military, even though they are usually militant Zionists

Their men often do not work, choosing instead to study the Torah. Neither do their wives work as their role is to raise the family.

They have enormous families (go ye forth and multiply) but most of them and their children are living on the Israeli DOLE.

They do things like impose their religious beliefs on their own fellow Israeli citizens, even to the point of phycially attacking people they do not approve of.

I suspect, if there was NO PALESTINIAN issue facing the citizens of Israel ( and to some extent, keeping the Israeli people occupied) these folks would become public enemy number 1 to many Israeli citizens.

Any orthodox Jew which respects himself will never abuse nor hurt a Jewish lady. Most our men know that. It's this shameless part of community which needs a serious realitycheck.

There is a profound difference between 'Orthodox' Judaism and the small Haredi sects. It is no more accurate to describe the Haredim as 'Orthodox' than it is to use Fred Phelps' group as an example of 'Baptist' Christianity.
