New Hampshire Rep: Food Stamp Recipients Should Be Able to Buy Guns with EBT Cards

May 08, 2014

Washington DC - -(Ammoland.com)- On May 7th 2014 New Hampshire Representative Timothy Horrigan (D-Durham) stood on the state house floor and argued against legislation forbidding the use of EBT cards for guns, saying such a ban “is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment.”

The legislation–SB203–says:
“Any person who receives public assistance is prohibited from using an EBT card or cash obtained with an EBT card to gamble or to purchase tobacco products, alcoholic beverages, lottery tickets, firearms, or adult entertainment.”

In voicing opposition to the firearms ban, Horrigan said:
The firearms ban is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment. Cash benefit recipients presumably have the same rights as the rest of us to purchase guns for hunting, sports shooting, or even self-defense. Obviously they don’t have much money to spend on that, but they do have the right under the Second Amendment to do so.

What a nut. It's a bad idea anyway but to say the 2nd amendment mandates this be allowed is really loony!

An AK-47 is $800.00 minimum, do they get that much?

So the Dem is advocating for parents to spend EBT money on Guns instead of food for their kids.

Good to know.

First of all, a democrat all for gun sales? I thought Dems only give guns to Mexican drug lords. And second with EBT cards? Sounds like more tax dollar spending. This guy is off his rocker.

What part of FOOD stamps does he not understand?

First of all, a democrat all for gun sales? ...

Seems to fly in the face of the officially authorized political narrative, doesn't it. Democrats aren't allowed to advocate for the 2nd Amendment! That would be like a Republican extolling the virtues of Roe V. Wade, right? The world wouldn't make sense! ::uhoh3:

Although most if not all states have prohibitive requirements to receiving a small cash benefit to supplement the Food-only benefit, the EBT system is set up to accommodate both simultaneously.

What the Congressman is arguing against, and rightfully so, are legislative measures that may be intended to circumvent the rights of all EBT beneficiaries to engage in an activity explicitly protected by the Constitution, namely the right to legally purchase and own firearms. The right to self-protection is an apple that doesn't belong in the basket next to oranges like alcohol, gambling, and tobacco.

Its like clockwork on this board for the rw's to be against equal rights for all Americans and in favor of controlling what others spend money on.

Or black ghetto thugs either...

Now you're saying that blacks and Hispanics should not be included in Constitutionally guaranteed rights?

Yes if your saying that you don't think "white trash trailer park welfare trash" should be included in "Constitutionally guaranteed rights".

You can't have it both ways.

I don't care what other people spend THEIR money on. But if you are receiving EBT, it is to put food on your table. If you have enough to buy food AND guns, we need to cut back on what you receive from our tax dollars.

Spend your money however you want. Spend tax dollars for what they are specifically earmarked for.

One democrat does not equal the use of the word democrats, again Speedy has shown the value of his education and intelligence...
