I don't think that what he actually said needed to be taken the way it was - his opponents (in both parties) saw opportunity and ran with it. His bigger sin was not condemning it, for obvious reasons - he wanted every vote he could get. One of the reasons I voted against him.

But back to the point. The noise from the Left has been so loud and so hyperbolic that they're playing a role in this too. It's not at all unlike the attacks on police officers after well-known events - people are hearing the rhetoric, and not they're acting on it. So now we have this story, among others.

People on both ends could be more thoughtful about what they say in this environment, don't you agree?
