Discussing politics with people who don't share your views........

When it comes to Trump, I think it's largely a personality thing. I've had serious problems with the politics of every President of my adult life. But I'd have jumped at the chance to "have a beer" with any of them. I would not want to do that with Trump. He's the kind of person I've always tried to avoid.

But I know people who don't see him that way at all. Whatever it is about Trump that disgusts me, doesn't bother them at all. They even find it appealing in some way.

That's because Trump talks to people in an average way. He discusses politics like most of us do here. He found a way to relate to people like no other leader has.

I guess "Make America Average Again" didn't poll well.

Polls are designed to try and get people what to think--not tell you what they think.
...

I'm sorry that you didn't get my joke.

Trump talks politics like a moron with no education and no curiosity..

I would have given you more credit...but hey...you said it

You know, there has been a lot of talk (mostly by comedians) about how people like to live in an echo chamber and only talk with others who think like them. Some have said that discussing politics with someone who doesn't agree with you is a way to mend the divide and learn compromise. Face to face negotiation has been proven to lead to compromise and understanding.

Turns out that ain't the case when it comes to the Internet. Seems that if you are discussing politics with a person different than your group can actually be worse than living in a bubble, because people will dig in even harder in their views. I guess the lack of face to face communication is what causes it to happen.

Caught in a political echo chamber? Listening to the opposition can make partisanship even worse

Dwelling in a political echo chamber — where you only encounter people who agree with you — is hardly conducive to a healthy democracy.

But it turns out that broadening your horizons by perusing opposing points of view on social media may just make the partisan divide worse.

That’s the depressing result of an unusual experiment involving 909 Democrats and 751 Republicans who spend a lot of time on Twitter.

“Attempts to introduce people to a broad range of opposing political views on a social media site such as Twitter might be not only ineffective but counterproductive,” researchers reported this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Political polarization is on the rise in America, and the results aren’t pretty, the study authors explained.

“Americans are deeply divided on controversial issues such as inequality, gun control, and immigration,” they wrote. “Partisan divisions not only impede compromise in the design and implementation of social policies but also have far-reaching consequences for the effective function of democracy more broadly.”

The researchers, led by Duke University sociologist Christopher Bail, set out to do something about this problem by harnessing the power of Twitter.

They already knew people become more inclined to compromise on political issues when they spend time with people who hold opposing views. Face-to-face meetings can override negative stereotypes about our adversaries, paving the way for negotiation.
Well most of what you read is trash, most of what you see on TV is trash, most of what you hear is trash, and most of what you say is, yep trash. So unless you agree with the Progressives you are trash from the South. Bad Karma.

You need to think just what is he trying to do. and take it from there. Look at little deeper at what is said and where it is said it makes you more powerful and smarter.

Yes, here we go again, and you Socialists/ Communists don't think anybody caught on yet:

Trump is an uneducated moron.
GW was an idiot.
Ford was a clumsy ox.
Reagan was a stupid F.

It gets real old after a while.....at least to people educated in politics. But for the left, they hold on to this stereotype like the stupid racist thing all the time. You actually think you're convincing people.

It must have been a bad one then. :auiqs.jpg:

Well Mac, you can see it here on these boards everyday. I think that the anonymous nature of message boards makes people less likely to compromise.
What concerns me is that I'm seeing more and more of this manic behavior in real life. More and more people I talk to and see are walking around, one inch away from completely losing their shit on someone. Screaming, not listening, ever.
.
It sounds good in theory that face to face discussion would lead to more compromise and perhaps seeing at least some of the other sides views. I'm not sure where these discussions would happen. Coffee shops? I think within 10 minutes Lattes would be flying around the room.

Disagreeing with a lefty on social media is basically the same as asking to be banned.

I dont talk politics in real life, if someone does I just change the subject, it would be unfair to them if I ripped them apart ( I never found my equal when it comes to news and politics in real life, I can play It both sides liberal and conservative)...it's not worth my time or to make enemy's ...( I used to though and learned my lesson)

In our current condition, you're probably right. I don't know what gets the ball roll rolling. Maybe nothing. We may just end up with some weird permanent political apartheid. If we do, it'll be our own fault. We're choosing to act like this.

You are truly an uninformed sicko.

The discourse on the internet is a good gauge for what people are thinking.

It’s obvious the most liberals are obsessed with Social Justice and it’s obvious most conservatives are obsessed with small government and the rule of law.

And conspiracies. Lots of conspiracies.

Like Trump and Putin rigging the election, yes.

Yes, just like that.
That is reality yet you all would rather believe the "deep state", headed by HRC, is affectuating a soft coup against Trump.

SO SHE'S THE ONE RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS

HOLY SHIT I KNEW IT

TURN HER INTO THE GOVERNMENT IMMEDIATELY
.

Exactly. Where's the middle ground in that scenario? Nowhere.
Coming to terms with any degree of a middle ground, anything that may exist outside of a small ideological sphere, is simply beyond many.

Intellectual laziness, an unwillingness to perform any level of intellectual elasticity, is simply too much work. It's much easier to just pick a tribe and be obedient.

Worse, this affliction is clearly spreading.

I tend to be anchored in what is actually happening in the real world. I will not give credence to those who ignore that in favor of alternate realities. Facts are facts.

I think we have reached a point that this alternate reality these people have created is now literally a closed circuit. It has taken a while, but the alternate ideological universe is now literally a closed space, independent of outside influence.

As I said, all we can do at this point is observe.

Do you believe walkaway was made by the Russians or not?

The reality is a closed circuit because so many have pressed to move the circuit outside their actual area of influence. As the push for more federal involvement increases, the further from the source the arguments, decisions and policies stray. In attempts to leverage outside opinions, that cannot be accessed or assumed in local legislation, we have closed the circuit to whatever those in the beltway want to produce and present as initiatives and policy.

When you grant power to those you really have little or no control over, you have made a poor choice at best. The fact people will argue with their neighbors, family, friends, and co-workers to a point they no longer want to discuss mutual solutions, is simply the product of putting the issues in the hands of people who really aren't accountable to the community for their decisions.
