“It will be devastating if their paycheck is about half of what it usually is,” said Colleen Kelley, president of the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents about 150,000 federal workers. “Their mortgage isn’t cut in half -- their rent, their food, their utility bills aren’t cut in half. They are middle America. They are like most other Americans who live paycheck to paycheck.”
About 40 percent of the workers in the union are paid less than $50,000 a year, Kelley said.

And here is a perfect example of financial irreponsibility combined with the belief that one does not need to save for a a rainy day because their unionized government job "would always be there".. Here in this story we have a furloughed government worker who IS being paid, wiping a tear from her eye. In the article she mentions luxury item purchases. She also makes a nice living. Takes home over $700 per week on FULL salary. A nice living yes. But if not careful with her money, not so good.
The most glaring problem here is these government workers seem to think they can rack up credit card debt because of the belief their jobs are untouchable.
