Dont dress black and you should be fine

I don't care what color you are, I see you wearing a hoodie with the hood pulled up,and it isn't cold, combined with your undies showing, I think thug.
That wouldnt be exactly thinking. That would be giving into your instinctive impulse to categorize people.
What would your instinctive impulse be if approached by five loud-mouth whiteboys in welding caps and sporting various sickening desecrations of the Confederate battle flag?

Yeah, you see that everyday walking the streets of Ferguson, MO. NOT

Whether you like to acknowledge it or not, we all are judged by our appearance. One thing my dad always said, you can tell how a person feels about themselves by how they dress. Not by price of clothing, but whether someone is well groomed, and clean, and how we carry ourselves. And he said whether we like it or not, others do judge us by how we dress and present ourselves. Me? Around the house, nothing but tshirts and shorts and barefoot. I leave the house? I know I should care how I look. And dress appropriately. First impressions count, whether we like it or not.

Of course you do.
Yeah, and when 1 son went through that phase I let him know it.

Know what?

He looks like a thug?

Is he a thug?

Get over it. Perception is there whether one likes it or not. You see a white person with sores all over and thin as a rail, one assumes they are a druggie, too.
Tatts. When you see someone with shitloads of tatts all over their body...arms, legs, face, neck, head...what is your immediate thought? What if it is a young girl in her early 20's?
I used to think tats meant a criminal, back in the day.

Today, I think they mean a mindless sheep, with too much disposable cash, trying to be "different" just like everybody else.
In hindsight do you think it was intelligent to assume someone with tatts was a criminal?

No, you see it out in the all white country wards of Bumfuck County USA.

For all the IF's going on around here....IF a frog had wings it wouldn't bump its ass as it hopped.

My instiinctive impulse would be that they wanted an ass kicking.
But, you would categorize them, negatively, as you should.

No shame in profiling; it's hardwired in the DNA.

But back to the hoodie; you can't beat it for covering a pistol and keeping folks from identifying features such a race or even gender, or hair color, etc.

When off my turf, out of my comfort zone, the hoodie is the way to go.

Out here in the sticks, we just carry deer rifles most of the time, in case we run into hogs.

If I went around here in a hoodie, people would think I'd gone nuts.
You tend to do that when someone is sporting a confederate flag. All the other attributes wouldnt bother me. Dressing with a hoodie is not the equivalent of a confederate flag.
I disagree to the extent that dressing in a hoodie and carrying yourself in a certain manner is the equivalent to a lot of people, and how it is perceived is what matters.

Dorks in hoodies that carry themselves like dorks are just perceived as dorks.

I have heard every explanation for the hoodie, including, from several black parents, that blacks are more sensitive to the cold than whites are.

This was when my black, female principal tried to ban hoodies from the campus.

That did NOT fly.

She did get a uniform policy for the parish though, 20 years later, they still wear them, and violence is worse than ever.
How is dressing in a hoodie and not being a dork carrying yourself in a certain manner? I cant understand what you are trying to say. I don't think a explanation is really necessary as to why someone should be allowed to wear them. Its the height of ignorance to attribute a certain behavior to someone wearing a hoodie.. Hoodies dont have the power to make you violent. I think black people are more prone to get cold. In general we have less body fat. There is a reason not a lot of Black people go skiing and snowboarding. The thought of being cold tends to discourage you.

Depends. Do these people have a permanent scowl fixed on their face; adorn themselves with material goods their outward behaviour suggests would alienate the kind of people who could offer them a position whereby they could legally aquire the means to buy such merchandise or does the appearance and behaviour of their associates imply that they condone (or even take part part in) the kind of criminality that plagues the world's inner cities?

Tatts are ok for me on guys arms or back or chest or all the areas mentioned. On the face, head, neck..not so much. Otherwise, I see them as thugs or convicts. On women...a nice tatt is fine but when they have full sleeves and its all over their legs....tramp.

First off, anyone with a Mohawk has issues deeper than tattoos.

I have no idea who this is, though I do recognize the NBA logo.

People aren't interested in hiring, or being in the vicinity of, morons who advertise their desire to be considered part of a criminal culture.

Get over it.

There was a better than even chance, in the time and place, that anyone displaying them was a criminal.

Sores are indicators of poor health. Clothes can be taken on and off. I wear suits most of the time. When not wearing suits I look like what some timid people would call a thug.

Just look at what this guy and his kids have to do just to not be seen as a criminal first. Because not being a criminal isnt enough you have to

Dress different
Warm Colors
No hoodies
No tennis shoes
Dont hold anything in your hand that could be "seen" as a weapon....like a cell phone, a spatula, an object of any kind or nothing at all.
etc etc etc

Right after Columbine I was profiled a half dozen times because I looked the part. Not only did I keep wearing black, I went to a local pawn shop and bought their "Columbine Duster" coat.

I don't change myself to avoid the stupidity of others. If anything I'll change to attract it and then get them in trouble.

Well it isn't like he needs a job.

People generally will give atheletes and artists a little more leeway when it comes to their personal, artistic expression.

That's because you are an idiot. You seek to alarm others, and draw negative attention to yourself.

That's fine. Enjoy it when you get it.

No, he wasn't but he would be perceived that way by others. It is what it is. Just as someone with multiple face piercings is perceived to be bangers whether they are or not.
Tattoos and Body Piercing Adolescent Self-Expression or Self-Mutilation Psychology Today
Peer-reviewed scientific studies conclude that tattooed and pierced people share characteristics with the following extremely undesirable groups of suffering and damaged people: pickers, burners, head bangers, self cutters, self-injurers, dangerous risk takers, eating disorders, self-haters, substance abusers, depressed, socially alienated.

“In 1999 The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry listed tattooing and 'excessive piercing' along with picking, burning, head-banging and cutting as forms of self-injury. In The Journal of Psychosomatic Research (2006, volume 6, issue 4), Adolescence (2002, volume 37, issue 147), The Journal of Adolescent Health (2005, volume 36, issue 4), Deviant Behavior (2009, volume 30, issue 6) and Pediatrics (2002, volume 109, issue 60), tattooing and body piercing are associated with dangerous and sometimes lethal risk-taking behavior, eating disorders, self-loathing, substance abuse, depression and social alienation.”

US Merchant Marine, Port of Oakland, 66-69.

Merchant Marine was a haven for criminals then, or, at least the small shipping lines were.

I did see a much higher class of people on the Sea-Land containers ships than on the Waterman Line.

What kind of issues do they have? Its amazing how strong the instinct is to categorize people without any knowledge of why they appear they way they do.
