Alt-Right Frames Wrong Esteban Santiago for Shooting, Kickstarts Racist Conspiracy Theory
Far rightwing figureheads immediately invented an elaborate and racist conspiracy theory that CNN had lightened a photo of alleged Fort Lauderdale airport shooter Esteban Santiago shortly after the Friday attack.

In reality, CNN had yet to air a picture of Santiago, let alone lightened a picture of him. The conspiracy also used a picture of an entirely different man named Esteban Santiago—not the alleged shooter.

Still, writers at websites like InfoWars and Gateway Pundit tweeted about CNN’s nonexistent Photoshop job. Former Republican Florida Congressman Allen West, who represented Fort Lauderdale itself, even tweeted about the conspiracy and linked to an article about it on his own website.

“Why is CNN attempting to make the shooter look more white? Bizarre,” reads InfoWars editor Paul Joseph Watson’s tweet, which had 3,500 retweets at press time.

Gateway Pundit’s Jim Hoft even wrote a story about the so-called incident, titled “Look How CNN Doctored Photo of Ft. Lauderdale Shooter Esteban Santiago,” which had 2,500 shares in its first hour on Facebook, according to BuzzSumo.

“It appears CNN doctored the photo to make the suspect look more white,” wrote Hoft. “Sad.”

The attached picture, which was neither aired nor lightened by CNN, is of a 39-year-old Esteban Santiago, who lives in New York state. The image was pulled from a Florida sex offender registry.

Instead, the Esteban Santiago who shot 13 people and left five dead in Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood Airport on Friday was born in New Jersey and spent the last several years living in Anchorage, Alaska. According to officials, he is 26, not 39, and is currently in police custody
.

It appears I repeated the mistake since I Googled the picture and came up with the sex offender website. That Santiago was born in 1977, making him almost 40 years old.

Esteban Santiago: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know
estebanpicbadoo1.jpg

Esteban Santiago ID’d as Airport Gunman; Flew With Gun in Checked Luggage
Santiago was born in New Jersey, according to NBC News, and was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard. ABC News reports Santiago joined the National Guard in early 2016 and was honorably discharged approximately four months ago. He served in Puerto Rico and Iraq before moving to Alaska two years ago, his brother, Bryan Santiago, told reporters. He described the his brother as "pro-American" and "spiritual." He was receiving psychological counseling, his brother said. Santiago has a girlfriend and child in Alaska, according to NBC News.

Santiago reportedly visited an FBI office in Anchorage in 2016, which prompted officials to contact local authorities to make sure he received a mental health check. According to the Washington Post, Santiago expressed incoherent thoughts during the visit and said that he believed the federal government was after him, agents said. Officials were not sure what happened after local authorities approached Santiago about the concerns.

Alaskan court records show a criminal record under Santiago's name for minor traffic infractions including operating a vehicle without insurance and a broken taillight. Records also show his landlord evicted him for non-payment of rent in February 2015.

In January 2016, Santiago was charged with two misdemeanor crimes: one count of fourth-degree assault and another for damage of property over $50. According to a spokesperson from the Anchorage Police department the incident was related to domestic violence.

The case was resolved in March when Santiago entered into a deferred prosecution agreement, an alternative to adjudication where a state prosecutor dismissed the charges in exchange for Esteban’s completion of requirements that are unknown.

The point has already long since been proven about the media. And since (a) I'm half Hispanic myself, and (b) I was in the media for nearly 20 years, I give myself special dispensation when it comes to matters of the media and its cynical leveraging of skin color.

Sep 5, 2014 - ISIS hand signal.jpg. ... The Islamic State militants, known as ISIS, are now using a single, raised index finger as the symbol of their cause. It's a well-known sign of power and victory around the world, but for ISIS, it has a more sinister meaning.
If that's what he's trying to do, he's doing it wrong. The gesture is to point up at the sky signifying "oneness of Allah". The same gesture is used by certain Born Again Christians to me "Jesus is Lord".

The meaning of the ISIS hand sign

The law does not allow us to lock people up, even when they have a history of mental illness and have reported to the FBI that they have delusions that ISIS is planting thoughts in their head.
