Of the numerous types of socialism only one was connected to communism, and that was Marx's Scientific Socialism. The USSR tried for a couple of years and then dropped it like a bad habit replacing it with NEP, a new economic policy.
In the meantime a number of other nations adopted some form of socialism to go with their capitalism, and today many nations have a mixture of capitalism and socialism as does the United States. American conservatives still use socialism as a scare word and it still works with some.
