I believe the demand, from women, came before the invention of pads. Hate to imagine what they used back in the day, but they did something, maybe even stayed in their rooms the whole time.

The courtesy element works both ways. Can you not give women athletes some slack?

When competing in extreme sports, you need to feel comfortable to perform at the highest level. Is it the woman's fault for nature's timing of her menstruation?
A tampon could reduce her comfort & performance level significantly after 20 miles of running, so what to do?

Unlike the others, I don't get grossed out by some leakage of natural discharge. Those who do would not make good medical doctors or nurses.
