Finally, A Win For Anti-Gay Marriage Republicans

Why does government have any involvement in a wedding in the first place? Why are personal relationships legislated?

They are not involved in the wedding, just the marriage.

Government punishes married couples. That's why many couples don't get married. If you're married you're taxed more. If you're a married couple on Medicare you are also punished.

The government does not get to approve of who you choose to marry

Actually, if we had to pass separate legislation to "approve" the right to same-sex marriage, then it bloody well did. The government can forbid you from marrying a sibling, or a person with close family relations.

Those are not legal marriages
Your local Pastor cannot allow you to marry a sibling or minor either

Because the Govt choose to attach all sorts of benefits and privileges to that contract.

There are tax implication with concerns to filing status which even a non-state sanctioned (de-facto) couple can enjoy. Childcare and other offspring related tax benefits do not require marriage.

What other government benefits and privileges are dependent on marital status?

Not a legal marriage
Neither is marrying a 14 year old

But they have no right to restrict a legal marriage
If the Supreme Court returns marriage laws to the states, some states will make same-sex legal and some won't.

If you are in a civilized country like Poland or Zambia, they won't allow you to marry a dog or someone of the same sex as it isn't legal there.

That is my point. They are "illegal", the state has passed legislation to forbid them.

Why does the state have the power to legislate what is essentially a relationship between two (or more) people?

Social Security spousal and survival benefits for one

Married couples can transfer an unlimited amount of property to each other free of any reporting or gift tax.
