the cousins that married in my family in the 1700's and early 1800's here in the USA, were not first cousins, but they were second cousins, and third cousins etc.

the link provided by Death Angel stated about 1st cousins I believe, had something like a 1%-3% higher chance of having a child born with problems than babies born to parents not at all related.... that means for every 100 babies born to them, 1-3 may have problems that a ''baby born of non relatives''.... so much more than likely, they will have healthy children.

Different states have different rules on cousin marriage, they could just go to a state that permits it.

But , really, I don't see how this Utah statute is constitutional. This is a lot less disordered than Gay Marriage which is supposed to be protected by the Constitution, I can't see why Cousin Marriage shouldn't be allowed

well, I'm embarrassed to say, from working on my family tree on Ancestry.com, back in the 1700's and early 1800's my great great great cousins married each other all the time!

I'd say there have been at least 10 or 15 cases where I have found such.... I don't know much about the history of when it became illegal in this country for cousins to marry, but it was not illegal a couple of hundred years ago....

Maybe it became illegal when it was learned the genetics could cause a couple to have a pretty deformed kid.
