The 80% are those who enrolled in NYC community colleges.

Let's tell the whole truth here, and not spin a lie.

So those are the ones who are considered bright enough to continue onto a college education?

So what of those who dont even get THAT far????

And the truth is still pretty pathetic. Plus if 80% of those enrolled in CC are deficient I would bet that the number of all grads might be higher.

Perhaps. As long as state higher ed commissions and boards make community colleges and 4 year schools responsible for remediation, the problem will continue.

The issue is public ed, and it must deal with the problem, not push it down the road.

So dig into it, and give us a full disclosure of the good and bad.

You do realize the whole point of the post was that Bloomberg is ignoring real issues to chase his statist control dreams?

Arguing over the fact that yes, the sample was CC bound graduates is like arguing over a leaking faucet while the Titanic is sinking.

You do know the OP was factually flawed thus had to be corrected. Now deal with it from that point.

Ok you corrected the numbers to add more clarity, which removes nothing from the concept that Bloomberg is a nanny state idiot, and NYC politicans in general love ignoring our crappy schools, cruddy infrastructure, and unsustanable pension debt to concentrate on soda bans, cigarette hiding, and forcing our gun control culture on people who don't want or need it.

Like most politicians, Bloomberg merely plays to the crowd. We need to impose a voter qualification test: Unless you can name your U.S. Senators and Representative, you don't get to vote in federal elections.

You do understand that that would mean the 80% High School figure is even higher. :cuckoo: Do you understand simple math?

The NYC community colleges have to take all applicants.

They may have to take all, but it does not mean that everyone applies.

Right. Some are going to apply to NYU, or Columbia, or some other college.

I was thinking the other end of the spectrum, the ones that dont even bother to apply for any post-secondary education.

This is a sample of the peopel who WANT to go post-secondary, and end up in the community college system. This is the mid ground of your academic scale, not the bottom end. If the mid scale has an 80% remediation rate, what does that say of the drop outs and the just graduate and go to workers?

If they are not turning away applicants, they are getting the lower echelon of students coming in.
