Universities could face 'no-platform' fine

Universities must protect free speech and "open minds, not close them", Universities Minister Jo Johnson will say in a speech in Birmingham later.

He will say "no-platforming", the policy of banning controversial speakers, is stifling debate.

From next April, a new regulator - the Office for Students - will have the power to fine universities that fail to uphold free speech.

Universities UK has said it will not allow legitimate debate to be stifled.

This is all very laudable but , as usual, not fully thought through. It flies in the face of the governments PreventStrategy which seeks to minimise the influence of hate preachers.

So whilst this initiative will give relief to various groups of fascists and neo nazis it also opens the door to hate preachers.

The world needs less illiberal authoritarianism and more freedom of expression.

Trying to shut down voices of hate only enables and emboldens them.

Stop being afraid of words. Give them the light of day, ignore them, and they'll fade away.

It's scary to be confronted with ideas you disagree with, eh? Remember those pesky colonists?

If there is a need to set up a government department to over see this then I would suggest that they ban all political speakers apart from election hustings.
People could still hire rooms nearby if they wanted to abuse certain sections of the community. And all at zero cost to the taxpayer.
