First, there is no correlation between good debate performance and good performance as POTUS. Obama did quite well in debates but has been a disaster as POTUS, so nuff said I guess.
Second, the FOX media types are part of the political class, in this case they are part of the Republican Party media support group. They exist in the same echo chamber that the Inside the Beltway politicians circulate in and so they have made the same observations about 'attacking' John McCain, slandering all Mexicans and wanting gun fights in the middle of American streets by allowing military personnel to concealed carry on post. Tonight's performance by Trump, while not stellar did not hurt him either, IMO. For many people like myself, when Trump refused to pledge to not run as an independent it was kudos for honesty, while the partisans took it as an indicator of betrayal and if they take steps against Trump they will possibly create a self-fulfilling prophesy. I don't think this hurt Trump at all, and he might go up even more among independents in the polls.
But of course I could be totally wrong. We will just have to see.
As to the debate performances....
Huckabee I think accomplished more. His remarks did not seem canned and he handled topic changes gracefully and his joke at the end was a zinger that even the target laughed about. : A+
Rubio is more and more impressive to me and I used to hate the guy. His general perspective and viewpoints are inspirational and moving. :A+
Dr. Carson had a great performance that was funny and informed. A+
Cruz did quite well, but he was a debater in college and as a lawyer has had many court cases and clerked at the SCOTUS, so I guess he would almost have to be good at such. A
Walker did little, said nothing inspiring and was just flat. He did not help himself tonight. C
Trump needed to score some good points and I don't think he had many at all. I think he may fall a bit in the polls, but will ascend again. C-
Rand Paul did well enough, but he has this posture that seems contemptuous of others on the stage. Strong on facts, civil liberties but weak on generic impressions. B+
Kasich did well enough; nothing spectacular. C
Christy is a joke, an economic conservative who wants to jail anyone that sets foot in New Jersey with a gun legal or not and for any reason. D
Jebba the Bush again demonstrated that the worst mediocrity can still become even more mediocre. D
