GOP's slick Black History ads fall short, miss the point

Some Republicans rightfully point out that during the civil rights movement, Southern Democrats tried to block passage of the Civil and Voting Rights Acts. They forget, however, that in the past 50 years, white Southern Democrats (both racists and non-racists) have gradually shifted their party identification to the Republican Party. They don't account for the fact that GOP has admitted to (and apologized for) purposely using racially coded language to win over racially resentful whites in the wake of the civil rights movement. (Something I posted and linked to many times)

And they ignore data that confirm that while black political views have moderated in the past generation, blacks still tend to prefer a stronger federal state and greater governmental intervention, in large part because they perceive the federal government to have done a better job than state and local officials at protecting civil rights.

"The RNC’s Black History Month event and ad buys ring hollow since their party has continually opposed policies that give all communities a fair shake and allows everyone’s voice to be heard," said Kiara Pesante, the Democratic National Committee's director of African-American media. "While Democrats will continue to work with communities of color to make sure no one is left behind, no number of events or amount of ad buys will mask the out-of-touch Republican agenda that has made it harder for many working Americans.”

Something tells me Republican would do better courting Hispanics.

In short, and to be painfully precise, the Republican Party wants the U.S. to be a meritocracy where all people are judged by the content of their character and not the color of their skins, while...

The Democrat Party wants the U.S. to be a "mosaic" of different and often conflicting cultures, nationalities, genders and quasi-genders, with a cornucopia of benefits, special privileges, handouts, and rights given to those who can lay claim to being the most aggrieved.

When Republicans seek to end programs that separate people by race, making the different races compete on a wretchedness scale for scarce Federal benefits, they are called (and considered) hateful.

I REALLY would like to see the "data" that show, "...black political views have moderated in the past generation." Does that explain why only 96% of them voted for Barry last time around?

Some moderation.

Could you please comment on the GOP'ers here who chose to honor Black History Month by displaying prominent African-Americans in their avatars?

From the link: Editor's note: Andra Gillespie is associate professor of political science at Emory University. She is the author of "The New Black Politician: Cory Booker, Newark and Post-Racial America." She is currently working on new projects about race and the Obama administration and blacks and their relationship with the Republican Party.

IOW....Republican are racist suck, because I say so. Move on

"...will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." Martin Luther King Junior.
Sorry, MLK, but a system based on character is clearly what many people don't want.

That was his dream after things were equalized. We are not there yet. As it stands no such program has ever been put in place strictly for Black people.

Even before the March on Washington, he had applauded the Indian government's efforts to help the caste once called untouchables through "special treatment to enable the victims of discrimination" including the provision of Especial employment opportunities." Moreover, in his 1964 book, "Why We Can’t Wait," King compared the social reforms he favored to the GI Bill of Rights, which gave World War II veterans special preferences including home loans, college scholarships and special advantages in competition for civil service jobs. King maintained that African-Americans could never be adequately compensated for the "exploitation and humiliation" they had suffered in the past, but he proposed a "Negro Bill of Rights" as a partial remedy for these wrongs. He insisted that African-Americans should be compensated through "a massive program by the government of special, compensatory measures which could be regarded as a settlement in accordance with the accepted practice of common law." He added that "such measures would certainly be less expensive than any computation based on two centuries of unpaid wages and accumulated interest."
