Gun Myths

Myth: Concealed carry laws result in a decrease of crime.

“No link between right-to-carry laws and changes in crime is apparent in the raw data[…]

Thus, the committee concludes that with the current evidence it is not possible to determine that there is a causal link between the passage of right-to-carry laws and crime rates.”

Citizens have the right to carry concealed firearms pursuant to lawful self-defense – not to act in the capacity of ‘law enforcement,’ or to otherwise ‘fight crime.’

Whether or not carrying a concealed firearm ‘reduces’ crime has no bearing whatsoever in the right to carry concealed, and cannot be used as ‘justification’ for doing so.

Myth: The existence of ‘gun free zones.’

This is one of the more ridiculous and pernicious myths propagated by the right: that private venues which ‘prohibit’ the carrying of concealed firearms somehow ‘contribute’ to gun violence, and that criminals ‘seek out’ venues designated as ‘gun free zones’ to commit their crimes.

Needless to say, nothing could be further from the truth.

The fact is there’s no such thing as a ‘gun free zone.’

Residents are at liberty to carry a concealed firearm in any private venue they so desire, consistent with the laws of their state – including on private property where the owner has ‘prohibited’ the carrying of firearms.

Indeed, millions of Americans carry concealed firearms in such venues daily where the property owner has no idea someone is carry a concealed firearm – because that firearm is concealed.
