They're looking for independent verification. Yes, I'm sure they are talking to his manager, but his manager can lie, and might even be likely to. A computerized device doesn't lie.

And again, they can get his phone records from the phone company, but it's a lot more trouble and more time-consuming than simply looking at his phone. And it's very suspicious that he came up with this "corroboration" well after the fact, and THEN refuses to offer proof to substantiate it.
