To what is the "heart of the earth" in Matthew 12:40 referring?

My guess is that it is speaking of his body being in the tomb. After 3 days and 3 nights Jesus was resurrected.

Biblical scholars are still debating that. Some believe that during the three days Jesus was dead, he went to Hell, in order to retrieve the power and authority over it and death.

Where in the Bible does it speak of Jesus going to hell/hades after His death?

Jesus' spirit did not remain in the tomb but went unto the spirits who were dead. He preached unto the spirits who were disobedient in the days of Noah.

1 Peter 3:18-20
18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:
19 By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;

6 For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

In these two verses we learn that Jesus, while his body was in the tomb, went unto the spirits who were dead and established his gospel among them that all mankind will have the chance to hear the gospel before the day of judgement. He went and preached to spirits that were dead hoping that they will receive his gospel. This was not Hell. Hell comes after the judgement.
