At least marriage at that age has some historical reasoning as well as biological ones. Today both the lifespan and developmental stages of people have been greatly expanded, thus removing the need for early procreation.

When people lived to 30 and sometimes half your offspring died before they turned 2 there was a limited window to procreate.

And again, the "12" thing is just so you don't have to discuss the move to make ANY marriages illegal under the age of 18 while giving the A-OK to drugging and mutilating the very same kids.

The closest you can get historically to the nuttery of the current trans craze is neutering young boys back in the day, which was to make them keep their singing voice in the west, or so they could serve the emperors in the east without said courts having to worry about them fucking the emperor's concubines.
