Heroin use fuels surge of ER visits among California millennials

California’s millennials continue to flood hospital emergency departments because of heroin, a trend that has increased steadily statewide and in Los Angeles and Orange counties over the past five years, according to the latest figures.

The state data released last week show that in the first three months of 2016, 412 adults age 20 to 29 went to emergency departments due to heroin. That’s double the number for the same time period in 2012.

Overall, emergency department visits among heroin users of all ages increased, but the sharpest was among the state’s young adults. About 1,500 emergency department visits by California’s millennials poisoned by heroin were logged in 2015 compared with fewer than 1,000 in 2012.

Emergency responders, those who work in recovery programs, and parents of children addicted to heroin say the figures are unsurprising given the increase in prescription painkiller abuse that likely has led more young people to use heroin.

“One of the unintended consequences of this prescription drug epidemic has been the increase in heroin addiction and overdoses, in part due to the transition from prescription opioids to less expensive heroin street drugs,” according to state health officials. “Heroin deaths have continued to increase steadily by 67 percent since 2006 and account for a growing share of the total opioid-related deaths.”

The study results echo those from two Princeton economists, who showed last September that mortality rates went up among middle-aged white Americans from 1999 to 2013. Those researchers also identified drug and alcohol poisonings, suicide, and chronic liver disease as the primary culprits for the trend, while noting a particular uptick in the death rates of less educated white Americans.

Why are so many white Americans dying young?

Drug overdoses are reducing average lifespans for the white population as ... surprising increases in death rates among less educated whites.

I hope every LIB 'man-bun' and 'snowflake' in CAL. gets hooked on heroin. Then when they have basically stolen everything they can from their parents and the parents go whining to the LIB Cal. government for help someone suggests that if a WALL was built between between mexico, the source of the heroin and the US the problem with easy access to heroin would be at least reduced.

Where is this fentanyl coming from? I have heard stories of high school seniors, never have having done drugs, experimenting with one line of coke, and dying.

Fentanyl is a cheap, pharmaceutical synthetic grade opiate. Who is manufacturing it, and how is it getting into the black market? This is what is causing the deaths, it is laced into coke, crack, meth, heroine, you name it.

Why is there no investigation?

You might wish this to be true, Slick!

Living in Huntington Beach and the L..A. region you will realize that most of those abusing drugs were not all from Conservative or white families.

Maybe any corporate links up the supply chain to Insys Therapeutics Inc. need to be buried? :tinfoil:

The only way to eliminate the degenerates and proceed with the eugenicists' plan is to keep the overdoses up. These folks are no different than those that set up Planned Parenthood.

After all, just look at the attitudes in this thread. Many believe that addiction is a criminal problem and not a mental health problem.

Addiction is a symptom of a sick society, not a sick individual.

Human beings have been 'addicted' to experiencing 'pleasure' from the dawn of mankind.
It's in our DNA.
Food/sex/pretty sunsets/heroin. It all stems from a tiny place in our brains.
The stronger the 'pleasure rush' the more we like it. Hence drugs/etc which induce a sense of pleasure.
So it's not a societal 'problem' at all. It's human beings always seeking to experience 'pleasure'.
If we can smoke/inject anything that takes 'pleasure' to uphoria like heroin does so much the better for many. Then the addiction starts.
A long time ago when I was a teenager I was hit by a car. Broke some bones.
The strongest 'drugs' I had ever experienced was a couple of beer.
I was in emergency and a nurse gave me an injection of Demerol. HOLY FUCK!!!!! I felt like I was 'creaming my pants' for a hour!
I can only imagine what the poor people who are addicted to drugs like heroin must be going through.

Nope, addiction is mental, spiritual, not because of the individual.

If circumstances in which the individual had to live were improved, addiction would disappear.

Native Americans only became alcoholics once the US government destroyed their way of life. Only the poor and the upper middle class with no direction in life become addicts. Study this, I think you will find the light.

There is a difference between you and a real addict. I am making the assumption that you have tried these things, but then have chosen not to destroy your life continually seeking the next high, forsaking all rationality and caution for that next high. Lot of combat soldiers went to 'Nam and did heroine there. When they came back, they quite cold Turkey, no problem. Heroine addiction is a lie.

I was taking about addicts, not pleasure seekers.
