The paganism of the Roman Empire was syncretistic; that is, if they encountered an unfamiliar god, they assumed it was either a new god that they hadn't known of before or a different manifestation of one of their own gods. Either way, they incorporated that god into their belief system. So any new god was easily brought into their pantheon.
But Christianity wasn't like that. Christianity took no prisoners. Once you became a Christian, there was nothing else. If the other gods existed at all, they were demons sent from hell, or whatever. As Tertullian wrote, "After Christianity, there is no need of curiosity." What a great philosophy!
But one of the main reasons that Christianity ultimately triumphed was because Paul decided that converts did NOT have to undergo circumcision. Think about it: you're an adult male and you're considering converting to Judaism -- but you have to be circumcised first. That seems like it might be a deal-breaker...
So, Christianity triumphed because of penises!!
