Funny, I was wondering the exact same thing this a.m.--same scene from the Wizard of Oz, too!
They've been getting brainwashed for three generations, now, so it might not be as dramatic a reaction as you or I might think, but once the relief of a better economy and less punitive government control started being felt, I think most of them would feel a lot of relief.

I've had the privilege of talking with a few North Korean defectors during the two times I lived in South Korea. They are not all brainwashed. Many/most/? just toe the party line to survive or even get ahead in their system.
