People do not care about spelling anymore for the same reason that they do not care about directions or phone numbers. Technology has replaced the need and we can use that brain space for something else.

You can lament that we are not stuck in the 80s but it is rather pointless. All communication goes through a spell checker at one point or another and the occasional mistake makes it through. Since you can still communicate effectively, spelling has become a rather pointless hobby rather than a life skill.
