It was Christmas in prison: John Prine

I worked for a Warden back in the 70s that would buy extra Turkeys, hams, fixins', for Christmas and put on one hell of a feed for the convicts. I think he looked forward to it every year.

He had a friend that ran a raw bar in town and he would get us a couple gallons of oysters and he would make a huge cauldron of oyster stew and another of eggnog that he made himself the night before.

I know damn well he put rum in the eggnog but nobody said anything. ;)

We kept the mess hall open from about 1300 to the 1800 count. We never had a minutes trouble.

He even let the guys in the "hole" out on a sort of a Christmas "pardon". He was a really good guy, firm but fair.
