House Republicans drop bid to tie other issues to debt ceiling - CNN.com

House Speaker John Boehner appeared to acknowledge political reality Tuesday, confirming he would hold a vote on raising the federal borrowing limit without other provisions attached.

The vote is set for Tuesday night, according to House Republican leadership sources, and approval of the "clean" debt ceiling plan would avert another Washington political impasse despised by voters.

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said last week the debt ceiling must be raised by February 27 to ensure the full faith and credit of the United States.

On Monday night, House Republicans had signaled they would demand a condition for raising the borrowing limit, according to legislators following a closed-door meeting.

The plan would raise the debt limit until March 2015, which gets Congress beyond the November elections. It also would repeal cuts to military pensions that were part of the recently passed budget.

Boehner sought to put the blame for a clean debt ceiling bill on President Obama, saying the rising federal debt was his fault.

"It's the President driving up the debt and the President wanted to do nothing about the debt that's occurring, will not engage in our long-term spending problem," Boehner said. "And so, let his party give him the debt ceiling increase that he wants

The more important question is - Why bother have a "Ceiling" if it is always raised?

I thought they had decided to stop playing the losing hand.

Assuming they don't do anything mindboggling stupid, like shutting down the govt, AGAIN, they are certain to hold the house, and prolly have a 60% chance to take the senate. However, it's way early for figuring senate odds. People are dispirited, but the reality is rates are low, we are adding private sector jobs (though the long term unemployed are screwed) and 401Ks and housing prices are improving. But, Obama's constituencies benefit less from this that the angry old white people.

Congress's deadlock isn't actually good for fiscal conservatives but the Republicans have decided to not compromise even though the default position is to just continue the spending. I guess they thought it would help them politically or maybe they are just against compromise. It is hard to tell.

Congress is broke.

Ah what? What is groundhog day about them having a vote? I can only guess it is because this Congress can't control spending so the debt limit needs to be continually raised.

Holy crap Rightwing the GOP doesn't fight the out of control spending yet you still imply they do, wtf?

The country is going to hell in a hand basket with this debt and yet raising the debt ceiling is apparently a virtue to the out of control left wing.

Not necessarily. It's true the biz base of the gop is not putting up with Cruz's antics anymore. But IF we wanted to be honest about this issue of debt limit, we'd accept that congress has been upping the debt limit pretty much forever, and debt exploded under gop potus's. If we honestly wanted to focus on a debt limit, we'd be looking at the defict/gnp ratio, and the fact of the matter is that is going DOWN. Responsible people in BOTH parties would agree that long term there are structural problems with sustaining a downward trend. So, to the extent the adults have taken over the gop again, perhaps this is a good thing that will allow us to look at entitlements.

It is Groundhog Day because they keep playing the same losing hand over and over and over again....and expect a different result

The biggest "explosion" of the debt was under democrat POTUS. First FDR and now Obama. The rest raised the debt but it certainly wasn't and explosion and we got economic growth in the process, all we got with Obama debt is Obama debt.

You keep saying that but they are not doing that they are having a vote with no strings attached. Read your own article.

See right here: confirming he would hold a vote on raising the federal borrowing limit without other provisions attached.

What deadlock?

Republicans are going to roll over right on cue.

Oh, that's right, you clowns think that there really is any difference between republicans and democrats, don't you?

Thats the point. Why the posturing if you are going to have to cave in the end?

Oh JFC. And don't whine over WWII, there was sort of a necessity

So you show how Boehner caved to His Majesty's will, then you asked why Republicans keep playing a "losing hand." How does that make sense exactly? Even when Republicans capitulate, they are still wrong?

Saying we have to address our debt problem but instead of doing so raising the debt ceiling so we can run up more debt that is the true definition of ground hog day.

In the world of Statists? YES.

Quote: I would rather have a press with no governance than a government with no press.

I thought Jefferson said that, but I had trouble finding it in Google.

But whoever said it, they were referring to press being free from government control. Who would have ever believed that the press would so willingly love, trust and advocate government without any standard as our current media does. It's unbelievable.

Every time the Republicans have a hint of a spine, the media eviscerate them. The people don't really grasp it. I don't know what to say, they either go along or get pummeled. Until the people start to care what the Left is doing to this country, there really is no solution.

Why do lefties insist on behaving as if they lost the last election? WTF ever happened to hope and change?
