John Brown - Abolitionist

How is this character viewed in the US ?

Why is he not a hero ?

At the time it depended on your views on Slavery.

The South saw him as the devil. The North wallowed between not accepting what he did but understanding, to supporting it, depending on the given abolitionist sentiments of the person or group, and their view on violence as a method to achieving abolition.

He was a symptom of the divide between the parts of the country, and probably a bit insane.

He was a serial killer and not very smart. He and his gang murdered many people. For this, he was rightly hanged.

Taking the armory at Harper's Ferry without a plan, was clearly dumb.

John Brown (May 9, 1800 – December 2, 1859) was an American abolitionist who believed in and advocated armed insurrection as the only way to overthrow the institution of slavery in the United States."

" In May 1856, Brown and his supporters killed five supporters of slavery in the Pottawatomie massacre"

In October 1859, Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today West Virginia) . . . He seized the armory, but seven people were killed, and ten or more were injured."

"He was hastily tried for treason against the Commonwealth of Virginia, the murder of five men (including 3 blacks), and inciting a slave insurrection; he was found guilty on all counts and was hanged. He was the first person convicted of treason in the history of the country."

John Brown (abolitionist) - Wikipedia

I'm going to say the highlighted parts might have something to do with why he's not viewed as a hero.

Why is he not a hero ?

He should be

But he was a religious nut job who ended up doing more harm than good. He killed a lot of people
After his raid, the south went nuts thinking the slaves were going to revolt and kill them in their sleep. Just like Nat Turner

Goof. Nat Turner murder many whites including women and children. He did his dirty deeds nearly 30 years BEFORE John Brown did his. You dummy.

He's viewed favorably in West Virginia, but so is Stonewall Jackson and Robert Byrd.

No Shit Sherlock
The one thing that terrorized slave owners was a slave uprising. 4 million slaves in the south with 5 million whites. They knew they had tenuous control of the slaves.
After Nat Turner, they instilled strict controls over slaves ability to assemble.
John Brown tried to arm those 4 million slaves. Though it did not get far, the idea terrified the south

Southern whites feared slave uprisings WELL BEFORE John Brown. So, your silly point that the South went nuts after he committed his heinous acts, is historically incorrect and well...dumb.

Brown was clearly a psychopathic personality. He murdered civilians in order to try to make a political point. Union Lt. Robert E. Lee captured him and the federal government hanged him.

Evidently not

It hastened the Civil War

And that was entirely Dishonest Abe's fault.

Very true

The racist traitors in the south seceded as soon as Lincoln won the election
They did not even wait till he took office

He was hanged as a traitor. Sooner or later liberals will rehabilitate him and make him a hero.

The Confederate leaders should have been hanged as traitors
They caused 600,000 deaths

Damn those Democrats.

Yup, well they were Southern Democrats. But that party which has sided with Southern Conservatism in the US keeps ending up on the wrong side of history when it comes to human rights.

As for John Brown, he believed Freedom was worth fighting and dying for. In the South the leaders were trying to say that slavery was the natural condition for black people. That they were happy being slaves, and people like John Brown really shed light on how that may not be the case.

And yes, he was tried for inciting a slave insurrection.

Today most people would view someone fighting to escape and help others escape slavery differently. If your daughter was sold as a sex slave, most people today see a fight to free her as a good thing. But we have a lot of white Supremacists still around today wanting to hold onto that way of life who believe that he still is an enemy.

You can see that in his portrayals, where biogaphies of him never mentioned any sort of insanity or mind issues. Until he 1890's when the lost cause myths started blowing up. Then without any new evidence, years after his death, the push started to try and make him out to be insane which lasted up until 20 or so years ago when no evidence was able to be found to corraborate that change.

Give it time. William Wallace for example fought against the gov't for freedom, and as time passed, what he was fighting for became something honorable.
