The first family car I remember was a blue Comet. Pretty sure Dad didn't get 500K miles out of that beater.
 
When I was a teen, I worked for a man who managed to get a million miles out of a Datsun pickup with a diesel engine. He owned several restaurants that were far apart and was spending his days constantly driving between them. I couldn't imagine driving that many miles every day.

when i was working in the PO my supervisor used to drive from Barstow to Anaheim every day......108 miles one way....with a ford pinto no less....

That she keeps a diagram to show modern ''mechanics'' (basically just parts replacers these days) where all of the lube points are on the car was impressive, I thought.
