Larry Hogan on likelihood of third party candidate if it’s Biden and Trump

There's always a third-party candidate in every presidential vote. In that sense, there's really nothing new here. I'm sure such a candidate will get some protest votes from disaffected voters who don't care for either Biden or Trump. I really doubt it's going to make any real difference given how polarized the electorate is. Third-party candidates rarely make any sort of meaningful mark on the outcome.

This would be a good thing for US Elections.

Which candidate, Trump or Biden, would benefit the most is the only question

Naturally, they would have no shot at winning.

With Trump, you must overcome the cult of personality, and with Biden, it is the cult of party.

This would be a good thing for US Elections.

Translation, they know there's no way the GOP can win with Trump unless a third party splits the vote.

So they'll manufacture a third party if there isn't a desire for one.

And?

They will have a candidate if the two most disliked candidates in recent history run? How shocking I tell you.

Of course, one of them will win anyway but it is a good position to be in to get the best numbers possible for your party. Unsure of how this is 'good' for elections though. It is just more of the same without any changes to the underlying structure of the system.

If it is Trump vs Biden, there is a majority that doesn't want either.

A Third Party candidate, not Hogan, but a good one, can win.

It is something very new - a party comprising of one moderate Democrat and one moderate Republican on the ticket. That has never happened before. Usually third parties are more extreme than either of the two main parties, which is why they never get anywhere.

Reality - the same Democrat ticket that set a record 81 Million votes has plummeted to one of the lowest approval ratings in two short years and facing a challenge from within the party.

Hogan would not be positioning this No Label / third party if he did not see splinters in both candidates.

No moderates in either criminal warmongering party.

To vote for that why? So, we can have Patriot Act 2 and 2 A and 3. So we can more TSA restrictions on passengers at airports? And massive Homeland Security law legislation that of course will not initially put a jackboot on the citizens necks. Joe and Garland and others turned men into criminals from the post 9/11 laws enacted. We are heading to death camps.

The only thing a third candidate would do is help one of the original candidates. It wouldn't be an honest attempt to become President. It would just be a way to influence the outcome of the election. A weaselish ploy like that would fit right into the Marxists election playbook.

A third party win is a fantasy. No one could run third party and win. The system is simply not set up for it.

Political and historical precedent says that No Labels would draw more support from the left than the right, and most likely hand the election to Trump.
  • Roosevelt's third party Bull Moose run handed the election to Wilson.
  • Byrd's third party Dixiecrat run handed the election to Kennedy.
  • Perot's Reform Party run handed the election to Clinton.
  • Nader's Green Party run handed the election to Dubya.
  • Stein's Whatever-She-Was run handed the election to Trump.

The best it could hope for would be insignificance, like Anderson in 1980 and Johnson in 2016, who drew roughly equal amounts from both sides and earned exactly zero Electoral Votes each. They're in the minority.

Remember in 2020 when the left-leaning CEO of Starbucks announced he was thinking of running third-party, and every Democrat lost their friggin' mind? This is why.

Some really good points, but you have several things a bit wrong, including the omission of Wallace in 1968, and an incorrect claim about Perot.

And neither Nader nor Stein handed an election to anyone; this presumes that 3rd parties have no right to run and draw the votes they draw, letting the chips fall where they may.

But No Labels would be intended to draw away from Trump, and would succeed in assuring 4 more years of Joe.

The left doesn’t foolishly vote 3rd party - they vote for the best candidate that represents their values, and that is in no way anything any No Labels candidate stands for.

A third party could never win... because the EC essentially prevents it. It's why we've had two parties since the very beginning.

I mean, I know why you guys WANT a third party... you hope to siphon enough votes off from Biden so Trump can win again.

Where's the evidence of that? Not in the 2022 midterms, where the Democrats GAINED governorships and Senate Seats while having minimal losses in the house due to redistricting.

Biden will do pretty well in 2024 for two reasons.

1) People really do hate Trump more.
2) Women realizing what Republicans have done to them with rulings on abortion are going to show up with a vengeance.

Hogan is another sad man who can't get off the stage.

How and why does one set the record for most votes and in less than two short years, post one of the lowest approval ratings? People are not happy with the presumed choices, Biden and Trump.

A DeSantis-Newsom battle would get the electorate more excited.

For all you folks have talked about Newsom running for president, has he given even the faintest indication he may want the job?

Republicrats will decimate any 3rd party candidate. The only one who might stand a chance, would be Trump. He's not a Republican anyways. In fact, he's more of a democrat than anything. But democrats won't touch him because they've spent too much time attacking him.
The question is why? He was the best POTUS Pelosi could've asked for. She got everything she wanted from him. And beat him silly at the same time.
