ATLANTA (AP) - A civil rights group says a private probation company illegally required people on probation for traffic offenses to submit to drug tests at their own expense.

The Southern Center for Human Rights on Wednesday filed a federal lawsuit against Sentinel Offender Services and one of the company's probation officers in north Georgia.

Sentinel, which holds the contract to provide probation services for Richmond County State Court, has been sued more than a dozen times in Richmond and Columbia counties. It has also been sued another 15 times in federal courts Georgia, Florida and California. A suit filed against Sentinel last year in U.S. District Court in Brunswick asserts the company collected fees without valid contracts and also charged probation fees on charges that had expired without any prosecution.

The Southern Center for Human Rights filed the newest federal lawsuit Wednesday on behalf of Rita Luse and Marianne Ligocki, two residents of Cleveland, Ga. Each woman was sentenced to 12 months probation because they were unable to pay their fines in full after pleading guilty to driving on a suspended license.

I dunno. Maybe 20 times people might rethink this.

Privatization of any law-enforcement function is an extremely bad idea and a step in the wrong direction socially.
