Also, they forget to notice that even red states have quite blue areas in their large cities, and coincidentally, that's also where the bulk of federal welfare spending to those states goes.

You also forget that many "Red" States have large tracts of federal land, administered by the feds, and thus funded by the feds.

Ask any of those States if they want at least some of that land back, and it would be interesting to see their answer. (both the Feds and the States)

The folks in Red states largely believe in something called Personal Responsibility. This means that individuals rather than the State are responsible for their own well being or lack thereof. It also allows people to resist Governmental over-education, and other intrusions into personal decisions.

In the initial post I found the figures for percent of state GDP interesting along with the list of top contractors within the state. Report did a very nice job of conveying that information, thanks for sharing. On the other hand the State Welfare chart I found confusing and couldn't make heads or tails of.

They vote against policies that would hurt them in the long run. As Reagan said, "I'm from the government and I'm here to help" is code for " your screwed." People in red states reject idea of government welfare. At least Republicans in those states do, and they are the dominate political party in those states.
