Most people would not care about higher taxes if they thought they were getting their money's worth. The problem with our system is that we have no right to expect a quality return for our taxes.

We absolutely have that right but rarely if ever get it from our big, greasy, corrupt, power-hungry central gov't. The lesson all should learn by their 30th birthday is that the road to paradise does not run through WashDC and the idiots we elect should have no more authority over our lives or how we live them than the narrowest interpretation of our constitution allows.

State tax at 20%? Where? CA has the highest state tax at 13.3% if you make over $1 million. Hawaii comes in second with 11%. The rest of the states have state taxes that are less than 10%. If your local taxes get 10% of your income, it is time to move. Georgia maxes out at 7% with local taxes running 2% or so. And 7 states have zero state income taxes.

As for our military, we spend as much on defense as the next 20+ nations combined. Most of that 20+ are our allies. We could cut defense spending in half and still be quite capable of defending ourselves and our interests.

Even if the government could somehow provide for all our needs it could never supply all our wants. People still want cars and phones. Men will still want to impress women.
