Majority of Americans favor wealth tax on very rich: Reuters/Ipsos poll

Taxation is supposed to be equal. IOW, unless someone is gaining more of something by being taxed, then they should not have to pay more percentage of their income in taxes. Rich people get nothing more than a poor person does if they pay more percentage of their income to taxes. They get the same roads and all the same benefits as anyone else. It is discriminatory to expect them to pay for our politicians' escapades.
Why do trucks pay more road tax than bicycles?
The answer to that is too embarrassing to the argument about fairly participating in society, eh?

Are you a citizen of the United States? Road taxes?

Um....Yes there are....

No there isn't. Maybe in the UK, but Americans pay a registration fee.

Oh, so some trucks have to pay a fee, but I've never had to pay one because I don't drive a huge excavator to work. So his analogy was still dumb.

You keep saying that the problem with democracy is the fact that people are flawed. How do you propose to fix democracy if you claim the people in it are at fault and "not the system?"

Why does everyone assume there is a fix?

Cannot you not just accept that there is no perfect system?

There are lots of other countries out there with other systems, if you find one of them better, feel free to move.
If it can't be fixed, then why are you whining about deficits? They are a symptom of the problem with democracy. If you can't fix democracy, then you can't eliminate deficit spending.

My son is a Type 1 diabetic, something that cannot be fixed. If he and I were to view it like you then we would be like...why worry about it and try and deal with it since it cannot be fixed. He could just not worry about it and let his blood sugar get higher and higher till it killed him or he can try and keep it under control.

Same concept with our government. We cannot fix it, but that does not mean we have to let it kill us. We do not have to put 1/4 of our spending on the credit card. Though maybe we do since most people are like you and really just do not give a shit about it for a number of reasons.
Until about the 1930, there was no way to treat diabetes. Those who had it just got sicker and sicker until they died. There is nothing comparable to insulin to treat the ills of democracy. We can't fix the human race. They will continue to vote scumbags into power.

Your analogy implies there is someway to treat the symptoms. OK, what is it? How do you make politicians vote to cut spending? How do you make people quit voting for the ones who won't?

There is a way to treat these symptoms, knowledge and information. They are the insulin.
You believe the government schools are going to impart knowledge and information that is a threat to every bureaucrat, politician and school teacher in the government?

What universe do you live in? That is never going to happen in this universe.

Neither do I, I drive a semi tractor trailer, and actually I think he may have been confusing IFTA for Highway taxes, but none the less, anything over 55,000 lbs has to pay. It's a federal tax. So, anything above say, a single axle dump truck has to pay.

Someone honestly thinks roads and highways in the U.S. are free?
More likely, someone doesn't understand participating in systems that support us.

Besides that, we do not have any "road tax."

Actually we do. We have gas taxes, both Federal and State. We also have excise taxes on a certain truck and commercial tires. All that money is to be spent on...roads.

I acknowledged that, but most people do not pay anything called a "road tax." In my state, it is a registration fee.

No, but most of us do not pay a "road tax." Are you an American citizen?

Chris, generally I agree with you on a great many things...But, this is something that I have to say NO, too....Look, the taxes on your Gas is supposed to go to the roads, and while that falls short of paying for roads, the shortfall is still made up by taxation that we all pay...Here a report to congress...

"Regardless of how much they drive, the average American household bears an annual financial burden of more than $1,100 in taxes and indirect costs from driving – over and above any gas taxes or other fees they pay that are connected with driving."

So, while it may not be called a "road tax", we still pay for it.

Who needs government schools when we have the INTERNET?

I agree with you that we don't need government schools. In fact, getting rid of them should be your highest priority.

Okay, fine, but this has what to do with my original argument that he was responding to? Poster seems to think he is clever, but not really, and his use of the word "road tax" probably gives a way a bit more than he was planning on giving away. :D

I couldn't agree more Chris, I just want to make sure that when we are arguing with these dishonest pukes that our posting is factually correct, that's all...

WASHINGTON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - The idea of imposing a wealth tax on the richest Americans has elicited sharply divergent views across a spectrum of politicians, with President Donald Trump branding it socialist and progressive Democratic presidential contenders Senators Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders prominently endorsing it.

snip

Among the 4,441 respondents to the poll, 64% strongly or somewhat agreed that “the very rich should contribute an extra share of their total wealth each year to support public programs” - the essence of a wealth tax. Results were similar across gender, race and household income. While support among Democrats was stronger, at 77%, a majority of Republicans, 53%, also agreed with the idea.

If this is true, then the experiment called the United States of America as we know it is done....

I don't know about tires, but diesel fuel is heavily taxed. We also pay tax by the mile on any vehicle with three axels or more. There is something called an axle tax that must be paid by trucking companies.

Okay, well I would have no way to know this because I only have ever driven a car, so I only pay an excise tax and a registration fee. The original point I was making however was that the government should not be able to tax the wealthy just because they make more, without providing them with some kind of special service. The wealthy are using the same roads that everyone else does and get no extra benefits out of their taxes than I do. Then I get an argument about road taxes???
