A majority of Republican and Republican-leaning voters believe the party should unite behind Donald Trump at a contested convention, according to a national Monmouth University poll released Wednesday.

The New York billionaire won another 58 delegates Tuesday with a decisive victory in Arizona, putting him within 500 delegates of securing the GOP nomination outright. But should Trump fail to accrue the necessary 1,237 delegates, 54 percent of those polled said the party should back Trump for the nomination anyway. More than a third said the delegates should nominate another person, and 7 percent were unsure.

Already a majority that will only increase as his delegate count increases.

Right now getting out the message that Cruz is a phony anti establishment candidate is crucial. Ted and Heidi are completely inside the beltway elitists. For the life of me I don't understand with all the information about their connections to the Bushs and Wall Street how Cruz supporters can continue to believe that Ted is an "outsider".

Only 54% of Republicans think the party should back the front runner? You better hope that at least hits 80-85%

what people fail to remember is that Trump will bring over 25% of the Democrats that are more moderate

Why? Less that 54% of America thought Obama should be President. Yet he is President nonetheless.

When the entire establishment machine is against you, publicly denouncing you, and openly attempting to orchestrate the theft of the nomination... 54% is pretty amazing.

You're comparing the general electorate to a candidate's own party. Fail.

In order for Obama to win an election in the mid 50s, do you think there was ever a poll when he was the frontliner saying only 54% of the Democrats were sure they would vote for him? Hell no.

This is the most ridiculous primary I have ever seen. We have the candidates for the GOP, with the exception of Kasich, saying things about each other that the Democrat's would not even touch. Honestly, other than Kasich, all the Dems have to do in the general is re-run what the GOP candidates have said about each other.

Really, it is sad to see a primary race as dirty and vacuous as this. None of the front runners are discussing reasonable policy, just throwing our one liners that make sense only to the seriously deranged. When they are denigrating each others wives. Sad, indeed.
