You can't go into debt unless someone is willing to purchase your debt -- in the case of the US, the bulk of that in government bonds. Most of that is owned by US private and government stock holders (we purchase our own debt). A great deal -- $2.5 TRILLION is owned by Japan and China.

In order to avoid defaulting on that debt, we -- the US taxpayer -- will continue to pay interest on that debt until the debt is cleared, possibly never (currently national debt exceeds US GDP).

The current annual interest (the minimum we can pay without servicing the debt) on that debt is $400 BILLION a year -- 9% of all government budget expenditures. More than we spend on defense and social security combined.

As the debt increases, the amount of money US taxpayers will have to pay out each year increases as well.

So, that bill comes due every April 15 for all of us ... and it will continue to keep coming for decades / centuries to come.
