Okay. There are 3.7 MILLION teachers in the United States today. so 2,500 convicted of sexual misconduct is about one in 1480.

There have been 3000 cases filed against priests in the US. So that seems like both professions are equally bad... except that there are only 42,000 Catholic Priests in the US. So the numbers there are like 1 in 7.

Sexual relationships with teachers goes back to ancient times. Repression of such relationships though only came about very recently. As a child of the 80s I remember well the rock video "Hot For Teacher." And most every old black and white movie from the 30s to 50s on AMC involving romance (prolly 90%+ of them heh) features women under the current ages of consent (as in characters, not the actual actresses.)

America's been silently taken over by prudish hypocrites. Sex crimes involving children is abhorrent to be sure, but not every sexual encounter between legal adults and legal minors is immoral nor involves "children" (usually defined as pre-teenagers.) Illegal yes, but not necessarily immoral too. And simply because a law is in place doesn't mean it shold be followed and never challenged as the history of repealed unjust/unconstitutional laws shows.

Plus your own state's laws prolly has legalized sexual behaviour and marriage involving thos eunder age 18. So before getting your panties in a bunch over some teacher and some 16 yo student having a consensual relationship remember than but for the fact that it involves a teacher and student (which I believe is universally illegal in the US,) the relationship might be perfectly legal already.

The Schools have developed strict psychological and peer review systems to keep those sort of people out. Heck, teachers can be fired for things they did completely outside of school.

To me, this is a silly argument. Whether it's in the schools of the churches, or whether it's by gay or straight people, child sex abuse must stop.

As an anecdote, in my first year of university, I lived in a quasi-dorm/apartment style complex owned by the university with five other guys. We all had our own rooms but shared the living room, bathroom and kitchen. One of the guys I lived with was a muscle-head who became a gym teacher. Nobody were surprised when we found out years later that he'd been fired for sending sexually explicit messages to his female students. Don't know what he's doing now. I think he's a trainer.
