Mr Trump's first press conference as president-elect was a disaster from a PR person's point of view. In fact, he simply continued doing what he did to good effect during the election campaign, namely kick the press. It wasn't supposed to work then either, but it did.
Writing in 'The Atlantic', a liberal American monthly, McKay Coppins points out that Mr Trump didn't just beat the political press during the election, "he burned down their villages, defiled their temples, and danced on the graves of their dead". He's still doing it and it's still working.
Why is that? It's because the press's hostility is so naked, so obvious. Mr Trump, like everyone in power, must be held accountable, but the hostility of the media towards him is so bad, it is undermining its own ability to do this.
What we're also discovering is that if someone is big enough to stand up to the media, he can get away with it. The media is best at bullying those who aren't big enough to fight back, or else are scared to do so.
