While I agree, I think the sentiment was more along the lines of "the road to Hell is paved with good intentions". LBJ didn't intend to create a subservient welfare state. He was just trying to stay in office by giving people what they wanted. MLK, IMHO, was seeking to raise up black Americans to an even footing with the rest of his fellow Americans.

Note that, among white males 15-19 and 20-24 years of age, the leading cause of death is "unintentional injuries" (AKA accidents). About 47%, on average of all 15-24 year old white male deaths are there. Number 3 on the list is homicide, about 8% of all white male deaths in that age group. Among black males in the same two age groups, homicide is not only the leading cause of death, but accounts for half of all black male deaths in those two age groups. This disparity accounts for the high violent death rate in the US compared to European nations, a figure often used by anti-gun LWers but without accounting why the figure is higher.

Your ignoring so MANY people who cannot work.. If I may use myself as an example. I am 61 years old and disabled with lung cancer for a year. They don't know how long I will live ,I take immune treatments every two weeks that are designed to help me live just a little longer. I worked over 46 years of my life and I get a monthly check that I can live on. I did not make a whole lot, but I worked. I get $40.00 a month in food stamps. Its not much, but I can buy $40.00 worth of meats. I don't qualify for more. But you would take that from me. Because you think everyone on stamps have not worked and don't need them. Or were lazy or some kind of shiftless human beings or something.
