NATO soldiers in Estonia are being trained to fight in winter conditions. Not a joke.
Foreign soldiers in Estonia should spend two nights in tents, and then plunge into the ice hole, writes Delfi. At this point, the course of preparation for winter conditions is done.
They forgot to warn soldiers, that winter in Russia does not last 2 days, and the frost is not the same as in Estonia. But it seems that NATO strategists have planned a war with Russia for two days... Hitler planned for three months. Progress!
That was a "Winter Survival Course", not the same thing as an "Arctic Warfare Course".
One is to train you to just survive in the conditions, the other to actually fight in them. They are very different things.
The former is more for REMFs, Pilots, and those that simply might have to get by in such conditions until they can get out of it, the other is to actually operate in and fight in such conditions. The latter is normally 1 month or longer, and includes a much more in-depth exposure to such conditions. I spent over a month in Panama doing the "Long Course" at the Jungle Warfare school. The same school also taught a 5 day SERE course, so aircrews could survive in such an environment.
And when we took part in NATO war games in Norway, first we spent a month in the Sierra Mountains of California. Going through some rather intense winter training, including how to make fighting positions when you can not even dig into the ground. The irony was that when my unit got to Norway, it was actually warmer than Bridgeport had been. And while not experts on skis, most could at least get around on them.
One thing about the US, conditions are rarely so extreme so there are few places that such training is really needed. But many units do go through such training. A typical Marine Infantry unit will go through many different such courses every year or so. Arctic, Jungle, Mountain, Desert, and more. The idea is simply to give them familiarization with operating in such conditions, not becoming experts in each and every one.
